Oxwich Bay Beachcasting

The birds were catching more fish than we were, but at least we could see we were in the right place. Is summer here at last?

Sea fishing

Looks like the remains of a torture scene, doesn't it? I had a bit of an accident with a hook. I got a treble from a large plug embedded deep in my finger, up to the bend, and the barb had grabbed the flesh rather tightly. It came out of my finger eventually after much twiddling, twisting, pulling, pushing, tweaking and more pulling with a pair of rusty pliers. After about 10 minutes of leaking blood all over the place I was planning to cut it out but it didn't quite come to that.

I did catch a small, very pretty wrasse shortly after all that.

Fishing

I think it's time to take him to a lake to fish. Do under 5's need a rod license?

180 degrees of rain

It rained like this for hours. The ducks didn't seem to mind.

Wet wet wet

I popped up to Whitesprings to fish yesterday evening, and to see a friend that was visiting. I've never seen so much water fall out of the sky. And my umbrella leaks. I spent most of the time feeding the ducklings and sitting in a puddle.

At last summer is here. Carp are cruising, geese are sleeping, ducks are trying to shag each other, some noisy bugger is mowing the grass, and anglers only need wear shorts & t-shirt.

An Evening At Whitesprings

I popped up to Whitesprings Fishery for a session last night. Lots of fun bagging up on these small carp (F1 hybrids? - the one on the right is more cruciany). Thanks to my recent birthday I've picked up some new feeder kit and it helps - I've never caught so many carp on the feeder.

Spring Evening Ripples

This is the first blog entry this month, suggesting I've been too busy to do anything interesting. (Not entirely true - my dad came down on the weekend to babysit, which made for a great weekend). I did manage to get out to fish for a couple of hours last night, which was gorgeous except for the cold wind. I slowly filled up my keepnet with carp on the method feeder from the epicentre of those ripples, right on the corner of that island. I was mostly working on technique with some new kit I acquired recently, and it's obvious that I need more practice. I only bagged about 10lb of carp in 2 and a half hours, and missed more bites than I hit. Nonetheless, it was better than it has been.

Bouncing down

I have evidence here, that spring has arrived. This mini-video (best with sound) shows heavy, heavy rain bouncing off my fishing brolly, and yet I was quite warm. So we must have jumped from cold winter winds to April showers in just the last 7 days. I was happy too, because I had a nice net-full of at least 6 different species of fish :)

Country Weekend

It was my birthday on the weekend, so we went back to Cheltenham to see family and friends for a "country weekend":

Shooting clays (soaking wet and freezing, but very good, noisy and destructive afternoon - Kim started to get her eye in on some of the later traps).

Angling (a very productive morning on aniseed flavoured hemp of all things, except for the bloody vicious black swan of Burley Lakes, that tormented me all morning stealing my bait from beneath my feet and worse).

Taking the dogs out (Wilbur loves sticks).
