Carotid arteries

Have a look at where the carotid arteries lie and what structures are near them.

Jugular veins

Now look at the route of the internal jugular vein in relation to the carotid arteries.

Note the superficial location of the external jugular vein. Can you see it under the skin of someone nearby (hopefully someone talking or moving their head around)?

Take a look at how the internal and external jugular veins end and how the great vessels of the thoracic inlet form.
